Joe is a multi Grammy-nominated Mastering engineer. We've collected the best in high end vintage analog gear and the latest digital technology to make the best sounding records possible.. Clients include Animal Collective, Moby, City and Colour, etc.

After working his way up and paying dues at several facilities, Joe became the house engineer at New York’s Ground Zero Studios in 1995, doing audio mastering as well as live recording, mixing, tracking, sequencing and re-mixes. In 1999, he moved into Classic Sound as a full-time mastering engineer.

In March of 2005, Joe joined Trutone Mastering Labs in its midtown Manhattan studio that was built in the same space as the now famous Record Plant. While working there Joe learned the lost art of vinyl cutting, which has seen a large increase in releases recently.

Joe opened JLM in 2008 in DUMBO Brooklyn and solidified his place as one of the most sought after mastering engineers in New York. In 2015, he made the move to Jersey City and finally landed in Westchester County, NY in 2021. The studio is accessible via MetroNorth.

Clients include: Moby, Animal Collective, City and Colour, Dirty Projectors, Sofi Tukker, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Faye Webster, Deerhunter, Gang of Youths, Mt. Joy, Toro y Moi, Maya Hawke, Thievery Corporation, Eighth Blackbird + countless more

Interview with Joe Lambert Mastering

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: I work on all kinds of projects big and small, indie and major labels. Sometimes it's a full length with vinyl cutting, others it's one or two songs. I concentrate on finding what each specific client needs for their project.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love hearing a song and after a few minutes knowing what I need to do then hearing it blossom in front of me.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Remember why you started creating music, how you wanted it to sound, how you wanted to make people feel listening to it. Don't settle on just OK make sure it's something you will be proud of.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To make your music sound as best it can. So it sounds amazing in my mastering room, on your phone and everywhere in between.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: Again, there are many different needs so it's figuring them out for each person. How much? This much. ; )

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That it's the same basic process for each song and we use a lot of compression.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: There can be many, How many songs? What format did you record and mix to, what sample rate, are you releasing physical CD's or Vinyl, do you have a label, what what are some things you're currently listening to..

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Wow, I'm inspired all the time by different artists. It's usually something simple, a great vocal or melody, or a kid on the subway platform singing there heart out as if their life depends on it.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: It's a balance of experience and objectivity. Being objective about your own art is very difficult because you're so close to it. That's one reason mastering your own mixes is mostly a waste of time. I've developed an ability to listen to a song and know quickly what it needs. Then once I know I have the best tools to make that work.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Every song is different so find where that song "lives" then accentuate it. I don't really have any set moves or templates.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: I get every type of music and artists from all over the world and that's the way I like it.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Listening to my client.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: 90% of what I do is listening and reacting to what I hear then making the adjustments I find necessary to make the song (s) sit a perfectly as possible. The other 10% is listening to the artist's thoughts and ideas to make sure we get as close to what they want as possible.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: We built a fantastic sounding room in the heart of downtown Jersey City. 8 minutes from Manhattan because we want to be convenient as possible for our clients who want to attend. It has all the great gear I've collected over the years to make the best sounding records possible.

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: I likely wouldn't have electricity so a couple acoustic guitars, drums, a sax and a lot of water.

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: See bio.

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: I avoid having a style or sound. I want to keep a fresh perspective and react to what I hear and what the client is hoping for.

  35. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  36. A: All the ones I haven't yet!
